Leadership Luncheon with Russell Simmons

I was afforded the opportunity to attend an African American Partnership leadership luncheon with Russell Simmons hosted by United Way Greater Atlanta.  The email came to me for my boss so I asked him if he wanted to go and he said that his plate was pretty full but of course I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to volunteer myself to attend in his place. I usually would just ignore emails like this and just go on about my day but I was super excited about my boss saying agreeing to me attending. I paid for that luncheon super quick. I didn’t hesitant at all. So I booked and went on about my day and the rest of the weekend. So Monday comes and I’m trying to get cute for the day, you know look business casual cute, mind you I have no real clothes right now because I refuse to buy clothes while I’m still losing weight, nothing looked right. But I finally got myself together, I was super excited about this luncheon. I kind of new that I wouldn’t personally meet Mr. Simmons but to be in the room and hopefully catch some gems was enough for me.  Need I say he did not disappoint.  This man is like a super successful entrepreneur.  He has started so many businesses and has had major success. So I took some notes during his talk with Jovita Moore, who interviewed him,  and I thought I would share them, after all sharing is caring.  They are in the order the way he spit them out and here they are.  I also made a few of my favorites tweetable so click and share with your followers.

One thing that I’ve promised myself that I won’t do any longer is miss out on opportunities because of fear or doubt or just plain laziness. If I ask and they say no well at least I asked and I will probably find another way to do it. My Pastor said on Sunday that we have to get into position to receive our blessings and I plan to be in position and prepared for what is coming my way. I hope that you are taking advantage of every opportunity that is coming your way and if you aren’t START.  This luncheon was so amazing and I am super grateful that I was able to attend.  We also received his book “Success Through Stillness” so be on the lookout for that to be my next book review.

Take advantage of everything that comes your way.  You never know when you will be in the right position to get your big blessing.  Lets talk … let me know which point resonated with you or if you have any advice to add to the list.  What do you plan to start doing to take charge of your life and the position that you want to be in?

Until next time, live simply while making it extraordinary.

Words of Purpose

You don’t go through what you go through for  you … Someone is going to need your truth, your testimony, your learning experiences sooner than you think. So when the opportunity comes don’t be afraid to share. They need you to know that they can get through what they are going through. Share your story …

No regrets … live in the moments … leave it all on the table. No one wants to look back and say I should have did this or that when I had the chance when the chance was right there in front of you.  Live life to its fullest potential no matter what!!!!

When I read this I heard the tune “Do a little dance, Make a little love, Get down tonight…” But realizing that life is a delicate balance of making your life what you want it to be and represent.  You have to know when to move and when to be still and there is a time for both.  Walking that fine line of I need to do this but I need to let this just fall into place can get a little stressful and once you think you have mastered that rhythm a new tune starts to play.  Enjoy the dance and stay in step with the life that you want for yourself.

You know we often get caught up in the blame game and it is never our fault for where we are and what has happened around us.  But the truth is you are the only one responsible for you in real life.  You can’t wait for others to make you happy, get you where you want to be, and satisfy you.  You have to be willing to do that for yourself and until you are tired of being where you are you won’t make the necessary changes.  Truth is we as individuals hold ourselves back more than anyone or anything can.  So will you stop holding yourself back and GO GET YOUR HAPPY?!?!?!?!?!?!

Change Is Coming

One thing that we can definitely count on in life is CHANGE.

If you are a betting person you can bet your last dollar on the fact that change is going to come at some point in your life more than once, twice, three times.  It is always around the corner.  The worst thing that I think you can do is resist it because it only makes things harder for you because it’s going to happen whether your on board or not.  Change means growth in some part of your life.  You can’t be stuck in the same spot all of the time and in my opinion that would get a little boring.

Some ways that I handle change are listed below.

Talking to God keeps me grounded during times of change.  I always pray for guidance and vision … “God help me to see what you are doing in my life right now, give me understanding”.  Its a simple prayer but powerful because He always shows me and I may not like what I see but its happening and I just need to go with it.  In the end it is always for my good.

Baby Steps

You don’t have to jump all the way into the change when it starts but you should be taking baby steps to get to the place you are being pushed to.  Don’t resist it!!!

I have written in a journal since I was in elementary school.  I never knew how therapeutic it would be until I got older and realized that God was leading me here.  If you are writing while going through, you are getting your feelings out and if you go back and read some older entries in your journal you will see that you were being led to this point anyway.  There is always a prep we just ignore it sometimes.

Reach Out

I hate to admit it but I have been terrible at this.  I don’t like reaching out to people when I am going through things.  I always have this battle within myself going on when it comes to me calling someone and talking to them about the change I am going through. I have recently started doing it more but it literally takes me days to actually act on calling who I have been led to call.  If I hear it on Monday I am going to be like God I need another sign by Wednesday and I will do it.  It then becomes this anxiety in me that is definitely unnecessary.  However, no man is an island and you need support to help you through because change isn’t easy.  You aren’t meant to go through things alone.

Change is happening all around you and unless you live under a rock (even then the soil changes around you) you will be phased by it.  I haven’t always embraced it but I have settled on the fact that whether I like it or not it is coming.  If there is no change there is no growth and who doesn’t want to continue to grow.

Get excited about the growth that is taking place in your life.  I guarantee you will like where you end up.

Leave me a note letting me know how you handle change.

Talk to you again soon,
